A client came to us bored of his micro fiber taupe colored chairs he purchased years ago, but loved how comfortable they are.  The style has a classic, clean line contemporary feel so we decided to show him some ideas on using a mix of fabrics and simply reupholster, verses searching high & low for new chairs.  This idea could get expensive depending on the fabrics we selected, so we kept that in mind before we presented him $350 a yard fabrics.

What we ended up with was a leather by Garrett called Berkshire color Elephant:
We upholstered the seat only, resulting in roughy 1/3 of a yard per chair.
For the back (inside & outside) and the arms, we used a hip, masculine fabric which has a Teflon finish from Duralee Fabrics called Iron color Herringbone:

The total cost to reupholster the chairs was $125 for labor and the fabric resulted in approximately $100 per chair. For a cost of $225 he was able to get a brand new look and keep his comfortable, tried and true dining chairs.
Get creative, use nail heads, contrasting welting, fabric with bold graphic images on the back side of the chair and changing the traditional stained legs to a high gloss paint.  Make them unique, a reflection of your character.

Happy re-upholstering!
